31 Miles for Nature

I’m moving 31 Miles for Nature to raise £150 for Greenpeace - can you sponsor me?

Our favourite places in nature are under threat from climate change, habitat loss and pollution. We need to act now to save them. That's why I've decided to move 31 Miles for Nature this October and raise £150 for Greenpeace.

With a fifty year history of defending nature, Greenpeace's mission is to create a greener, healthier, and more peaceful planet. Any donation you make could help power their campaigns to keep our oceans healthy, our forests standing, and fossil fuels in the ground.

Greenpeace never accepts money from companies or governments, so they depend on supporters, like us, to fund all of their campaigns.

Huge thanks to everyone who has sponsored me so far.  I really do appreciate it 😻.  Also, having passed my fundraising target, I absolutely have to pass my miles target now.  🐾🤞

Further afield!

Wednesday 22nd Oct
Busway timetable that reflects reality found; nice day; WALK ON! Met friend at the St Ives P&R and we had a lovely walk by the river (spotting cormorant, crow, swan, sheep - one of that list is not like the others...) then a bit of a mooch in the town, and a nice coffee stop (swans, seagulls, pigeons and the most nonchalant duck I've seen for a long time). Also I came home with a rather tasty sourdough loaf from Hambleton Bakery. All very nice.

31 miles...

Monday 20th Oct
With time to spare to acquire a few more, to kinda sorta aim at getting an overrun to kinda sorta reflect the way sponsorship zipped past my target because I clearly know the best people. And no-one said you can't have a pause in a walk for a little swing on a nice fat rope swing. I know of two nearby, one in the Hall grounds and this one, which is on my 'dry-paws' route. This meander done in waterproofs which meant, of course, that by the time I was about a quarter of the way through the rain had stopped and the sun had come out. Ain't it always thus!

Still 'ere!

Saturday 18th Oct
This week has been a less active one because other parts of my life have required attention (including the garden).  A quick mooch in the Hall grounds, 'paper1' and a short local bike ride have been the order of the week.

On Monday a friend and I are supposed to be going for a walk along a bit of the banks of the Great Ouse.  I think it's going to depend on the quality of our waterproofs,  whether we wish to don them, and whether I can make sense of what's going on with the Busway timetable (detours and speed restrictions).

Down in the ditch

Sunday 12th Oct
A variant of the hybrid 'wandlebury' plan. Lungs and a knee informed me the bike section was going to be done by the longer-but-flatter route as they could not possibly be expected to go up Lime Kiln Hill _and_ the hill up to Wandlebury _and_ do some walking while they were there. Still, checking on the route mapper, they (and the rest of me 😸) managed sufficient of a walk to bring the total combined to 8 miles. Now we're all going to have a rest, and the brain has been informed that it needs to downgrade tomorrow's plan!

Knapweed seedheads

Saturday 11th Oct
On the strip of land alongside Fulbourn Road. When I first moved to Cherry Hinton it was a sterile regularly mowed area. In recent years it's been allowed more wriggle room and is now mainly not mown apart from some paths through. At this time of year it has a lot of shades of brown.

An old tree

Tuesday 7th Oct
According to my niece this is a candidate for the oldest tree in Ealing. It made a good focal point for the walk we had.

Sunday, week 1

Monday 6th Oct
Two more short outings, 'paper1' on Saturday and 'hall' today brings the total to just under 8 miles.   I, well certainly bits of me, regret the way my getting out on foot or bike has lapsed this last five years or so.  Maybe by the end of the month the bits will be less inclined to grumble!

Hall grounds had spots of colour that are to be expected at this time of year (leaves) and some that weren't, notably two groups of balloons hanging from branches (yes, that did appear to be marking a child's birthday party).   I can't see a way of adding multiple photos to posts, although there is an image post option (for 1 image only), at least not from mobile interface, so I need to get my act in gear and add pages to the website where the routes are.  Not today, I'm under a peacefully sleeping cat!

Edited to add:  date stamped Monday?  It's 16:20 on Sunday... 🤷‍♀️😼

The best laid plans...

Friday 3rd Oct
I had a nice cycle ride planned for today, but it involved some off-road and I no longer cycle on wet chalk (particularly if some way from the nearest road access).   I still have wet weather gear though, and it wasn't tipping it down, so I took myself on a short quiet roads circuit.  Do I feel better for the exercise?  I feel slightly smug(!) and very appreciative of the hot coffee and warm lap cat on my return.

Have also discovered the activity entry doesn't allow for part of miles but rounds to the nearest.

Don't worry I'm not going to log every individual outing here. 😸

And she's off (slowly)

Wednesday 1st Oct
Decided I'd get started on the 1st - no procrastination.   Useful to have the pre-mapped walks - 'pit1' today.   Haven't been in there since The Doggage and her human moved.

Mapped out some routes.

Setting myself a challenge...

Saturday 13th Sep
I definitely need to move more so signing up to this,  with the added benefit of raising money (hopefully!), should get me out from under a cat and working on being a bit fitter...

Just doing it is a challenge, but I've also decided that any of it that I walk, and that isn't local to me, must be reachable by public transport or bike.  Of course cycling also counts so some of my routes may well be hybrid.  Going to spend a chunk of time mapping out some routes with the aid of gmaps-pedometer.    If I really get my brain in gear I'll post some/all the routes somewhere then I can refer to them with a shorthand code.
