31 Miles for Nature

I’m moving 31 Miles for Nature to raise £150 for Greenpeace - can you sponsor me?

Our favourite places in nature are under threat from climate change, habitat loss and pollution. We need to act now to save them. That's why I've decided to move 31 Miles for Nature this October and raise £150 for Greenpeace.

With a fifty year history of defending nature, Greenpeace's mission is to create a greener, healthier, and more peaceful planet. Any donation you make could help power their campaigns to keep our oceans healthy, our forests standing, and fossil fuels in the ground.

Greenpeace never accepts money from companies or governments, so they depend on supporters, like us, to fund all of their campaigns.

Please sponsor me today and help me reach my £150 goal. Thank you!

My Updates

Halfway through the month!

Thursday 16th Oct
A week at work overseas, with little chance to walk but some really nice outdoor swimming opportunities.   In an outside pool  - not in the local sea (rough, and full of rubbish, so sad).
Then more airport steps .... even more as one missed connection and two delayed flights ... Chuck up to the ground staff at Accra Kotoki International Airport for looking after us under testing circumstances on Fri, Sat and Sunday!

Beautiful walk along an Accra beach on Saturday - the breeze took the heat out of the sun, so only later got the burn.  Wide sands and frequent waves, with horsemen (all men) riding beautiful horses into the shallows, a large team of people all working to bring in the catch and put the boat and nets away.   More rubbish, almost all plastic, strewn along the tidemarks.  But so long as careful, did not prevent barefoot appreciation of the shore.

And back to Autumnal walks in England, the leaves turning ever more jewelled.  Apples also turning red - there's a tree of very small ones on my way home and they are now so sweet !

Day 5 (& anticipating Day 6)

Monday 6th Oct
At work, little chance for moving except around the classroom , up and down stairs ... work involves the evening too on Monday.
Sunday - managed to get a swim in, outdoors - makes all the difference!

Day 4 (Sat 4 October)

Monday 6th Oct
Something over 3 miles ... along Lumley Beach .  Beautiful, until and unless you look closely ... all the 'heroes in the seaweed' are choked .... This place needs a  Big Beach Clean - all the shorefront enterprises need to recruit volunteers to remove all the rubbish.  Probably over several tides.  It's very very sad to see this visible human choking of the natural world.  Politicians need to prioritise waste disposal and water hygiene ... conditions will improve ...

Day 3 (Fri 3 Oct)

Monday 6th Oct
Airports ... had high hopes for walking miles and miles (you normally seem to) but only 1.3 miles, and none of it in nature, sadly.

Day 2 (Thu 2nd October)

Friday 3rd Oct
Another walking commute into work, picking up 6 pieces of litter this time.  And a walk home from the village via Tuckmill nature reserve ❤️.  And picked a large handful of juicy fat blackberries - must be the last of the season!

Day 1 (1st October)

Thursday 2nd Oct
Thank you to all the wonderful people who’ve sponsored me so generously.  Day 1 was just walking the commute to work … so not very demanding, but through some beautiful Autumn colours.  And I was able to help someone find his way so that was an added bonus! 2 miles so far.   And as I was walking home, an acorn fell off a high branch and rolled down right at my feet.  I took this as a positive sign from nature of a good month ahead .

Thank you to my Sponsors
