Part recce of Corfe Castle done

Wednesday 15th Oct
Yay! I've now passed two-thirds of target after 9 miles today to partly recce Walk 4 from Corfe Castle due on 26/10. This was a section I'm less familiar with as not gone via Scotland and Church Knowle for a very long time. Lovely wooded sections, with leaves turning, and superb views after climbing Knowle Hill. The rest of the route is  very well trodden, so I'm all set. A few pics added.

Walks 1 and 2: 33 miles in a weekend

Monday 13th Oct
I trotted down to West Dorset on Friday 10th for a fresh Saturday start at 9.15 in Broadwindsor. Dry, a bit grey but nice temperature. By the end (8 hours later) four of us had topped the four peaks, Lewesdon (279), Coney's and Lambert's Castles (210m and 258m) and Pilsdon Pen (277m). By Pilsdon the sun was shining. A
few pics added to commemorate. 18.75 mls.
Sunday was a leisurely 10am, with 10 of us starting in Litton Cheney. Again rather grey but mercifully dry. This walk is beautiful, with a coastal stretch to pretty Hive Beach, then my fave bit inland tracing little streams and rivers, watery jungle-like woodlands and an unexpected lake. Welcome refreshment at the White Lion. Pics added. 14.6 mls.

Warm up walk for the weekend

Friday 10th Oct
Friday 10th and I've decided to stay over in West Dorset to be nearer to the two weekend walks. To keep legs moving have done a 7 miler from Evershot near where I'm staying. Lovely woodland early on through the Ilchester estate, with leaves starting to turn. My fave season. A bit boring later on, not helped by a path that had become totally overgrown with no signage after I crossed the very fast A37. A few pics added of the good bits.

Day 3 in the Azores

Saturday 4th Oct
Second day on Terceira takes us on a 3 mile hike to the Misterios Negros trail which takes you through dense cedar forests, drenched in rainwater, and tracks strewn with uneven basalt rocks, with a bit of clambering included to reach another high point shrouded in mists. A true temperate rainforest. Beautiful. Then a  visit to a cavern known as a laxative, and finally a walking tour of the main city of Angra do Heroismo. 4.7 miles added to my tally

Day 2 in the Azores

Friday 3rd Oct
This walk finds us in Terceira, having taken an early morning flight from Ponta Delgada in Sao Miguel to Angra do Heroismo, main city of the 'third' island. Today we hiked a hilly four miles to 704m above sea level, through incredible green landscapes, wending a twisted way through cedar woodland draped in mosses and lichens to Rocha da Chambre. Some luscious pics added.

Day 1 in the Azores

Thursday 2nd Oct
What an amazing way to start my walkabout for October. Viewing the volcanic lakes and peaks of Sao Miguel, the largest island, on a truly beautiful day. We were blessed as it's often shrouded in mists. Ive tried to add a few photos of this stunningly green place.

My walks are now loaded up - and Walk 1 has been recced

Saturday 20th Sep

Firstly, thank you so much to those who have sponsored me for this event. I've now added all four walks to the Dorset 4050s walk schedule so people can see what they involve and join one (or more) if you want. You don't have to be a member of Ramblers.

Link here: https://www.ramblers.org.uk/go-walking/ramblers-groups/dorset-4050-walkers-group

In summary, the walks are all in October:

Walk 1 - big hilly, West Dorset Sat 11th

Walk 2 - watery, West Dorset Sun 12th

Walk 3 - river Stour views, East Dorset Sat 25th

Walk 4 - Corfe Castle and the coast, East Dorset Sun 26th

I've now, with walk buddy Tim, recced the BIG one and my plotted 16.5 miler (admittedly a few off-piste moments, which is what recces are for!) turned into a 20 miler in atmospheric mists (see pic) and took us eight hours. The pint at The White Lion was never more deserved. However, it was rather more than anticipated and I may need to adjust for distance - how many plucky souls fancy taking that on, I wonder - maybe just me :).

I will add another post after my October walks begin in earnest in the Azores. I hope the photos will be amazing.

A bit from Greenpeace about what they do

Saturday 20th Sep

A bit from Greenpeace about what they do

Our favourite places in nature are under threat from climate change, habitat loss and pollution. We need to act now to save them.

With a fifty year history of defending nature, Greenpeace's mission is to create a greener, healthier, and more peaceful planet. Any donation you make could help power their campaigns to keep our oceans healthy, our forests standing, and fossil fuels in the ground.

Greenpeace never accepts money from companies or governments, so they depend on supporters, like us, to fund all of their campaigns.

Please sponsor me today and help me reach my £500 goal. Read my separate blog about what I'm planning. Thank you!

I'm walking 93 miles in October for Greenpeace - can you sponsor me?

Monday 11th Aug
When this initiative popped up for October I felt compelled to take up the challenge.
WHY DOES IT MATTER SO MUCH?
I see an urgent need to raise awareness about the ongoing harm to our environment: air; water; land; as humans we rely on all of it for survival and it's human activities which are doing the damage. As the most developed (not necessarily brightest) species we are custodians for the welfare of all living things and we need to put them ahead of ourselves much more and in so doing create a healthier future for those coming after us. Greenpeace is fearlessly active on this vital issue and relies on donations to maintain its efforts. Just take a look at what they do for our collective benefit.

WHAT ARE YOU PLANNING?
This campaign aims to complete at least one mile every day in October, doing so to focus on My Favourite Place, in whatever way you fancy doing it. It is a celebration of the wonders of our environment, and as many will know I'm a regular walker, enjoying the loveliness of Dorset and beyond. So I want to make this activity memorable for me, but also bring other people along too, either by walking alongside me or following my activities, as you prefer. It won't be one mile a day (or even 31 in a month), but a series of my favourite walks I've either led for Ramblers in Dorset already or plan to, both east and west of the county, mostly crammed into a couple of weekends.
I reckon I'll have done over 55 miles across those four walks, which doesn't include any others I join, or three days on our hiking holiday in the Azores, which you cannot accompany me on - sorry :)
So my minimum target across October is 93 miles and by the end I expect it to have included the two highest points in Dorset, glorious Corfe Castle, the Jurassic coastline, a part of the county where you feel like you're in a rainforest, and a favourite piece of the Stour Valley Way. Some pictures I've added reflect these places.
WHAT CAN I DO?
I'd love you to support me by coming on any of the Dorset walks - and, if you can, to please support the cause Greenpeace represents by making a donation.
HOW DO I FIND OUT ABOUT THE WALKS?
I'll add separate details of the planned schedule (dates, places, descriptions) plus I will add them to the Dorset 4050 Ramblers walk schedule, making clear they are connected to my own challenge.
PLEASE NOTE THAT RAMBLERS IS A SEPARATE ORGANISATION AND IS NOT ENDORSING GREENPEACE, IT'S JUST MY WAY OF RACKING UP THE MILES FOR MY OWN PURPOSE AS AN INDIVIDUAL

Thank you to my Sponsors
